FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The 11th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team traveled across state lines and took care of business against the Frostburg State Bobcats and the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons by scores of 39-3 and 46-3, respectively, on Sunday afternoon inside the Joe Retton Arena on the campus of Fairmont State University.
The Golden Bears, who add a pair of dual victories to their first-place finish at the East Stroudsburg Open earlier this month, opened competition by cleaning up nine of the ten weight classes, wins that included two pins and a pair of technical falls to trounce the Bobcats in the opener.
Kutztown produced similar results when matched up against the hosting Fighting Falcons, as the visitors used four pins and three technical falls in their 43-point victory.
Second-ranked redshirt senior Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) led the charge for the Maroon and Gold on Sunday afternoon, recording two falls in the 184-pound weight class to contribute six team points in each of the two duals. Redshirt sophomore Javien DeLeon (Allentown, Pa./Liberty) secured the other win by fall against Frostburg State, while Nic Allison (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County), Joey Ortega (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) and No. 11 Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) each defeated their Fairmont State counterparts by pins.
Five-point technical falls were claimed by Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) and McIntyre against Frostburg State, and the Gimbor brothers were joined by Gannon transfer and tenth-ranked 149-pound grappler Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) in serving tech falls against the Fighting Falcons.
Kutztown's 46-3 victory over Fairmont State is the first dual mark to eclipse 40 points since a 50-4 win over Marymount in January of 2022, while they held their opponents to three team points or less for the first time since handing Shippensburg a 37-3 defeat in February of 2019.
The Golden Bears take a brief recess before traveling to Seton Hill for their first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference dual at the Katherine Mabis McKenna Center on Friday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m.
