Nkoa Abessolo records 18-and-18 double-double to lead Kutztown to season opening victory

KUTZTOWN, Pa.Jordan Nkoa Abessolo (Yaoundé, Cameroon/St. Maria Goretti (Md.)) finished with 18 points and a season-high 18 rebounds, Jalen Bryant (Edgewood, Md./John Carroll) led all scorers with 24 points and Jaiden McGhee (Townsend, Del./Middletown) netted a season-best 20 points to lead Kutztown men's basketball to a 104-73 non-conference win over Penn State Schuylkill Saturday afternoon inside Keystone Arena.

It is the first victory of the 2024-25 season for the Golden Bears (1-3 overall), who also scored a season-best in points.

Nkoa Abessolo etched his name into the program record book in just his fourth game in Maroon and Gold as his 18 boards is tied for third all-time for rebounds in a game and the most in a single game since Josh Townsend's 18 rebounds on Jan. 16, 2019. The junior transfer also shot 73% (8-for-11) from the floor and added a team-high five assists.

Bryant was scorching from the floor all game, finishing 9-of-18 overall (50%) and connected on four 3-pointers. McGhee finished 7-for-9 from the floor and hit 2-of-3 from long distance. Kameron Roberts (Townsend, Del./Middletown) and Juju Pagan (Tobyhanna, Pa./Pocono Mountain West) also tallied double digits in scoring, finishing with 11 and 10 points, respectively, with the former hitting 3-of-4 from long range.

Kutztown trailed 20-18 midway through the first half, but after a Bryant three to take a 21-20 advantage with 9:08 remaining in the half, never trailed again, leading 40-29 at halftime. The Lions never got it under 11 the rest of the way.

Amir Cunningham (Middletown, Del./Middletown) recorded six points. Both Yahmir Satterfield (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) and Kidd Brizek (Greenville, S.C./Powdersville) netted four points. Josh McKoy (Reading, Pa./Berks Catholic) contributed three points and both Brent Ricketts Jr. (Seaford, Del./Seaford), and Tyler Koenig (Waldwick, N.J./Pioneer Academy) added two points to round out a season-best 11 scorers.

Next up, Kutztown opens up play in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference as it hits the road to take on Edinboro next Friday, Nov. 22, at 5 p.m.
