KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team fought to a 1-1 draw against rival Millersville in a contest between a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division contenders on Wednesday night at Keystone Field.
The Golden Bears (7-1-4, 5-1-4 PSAC East) surrendered a goal on a nice top-of-the-frame shot by Lia Francis, but the Marauders (6-3-2, 5-3-2 PSAC East) couldn't keep Kutztown from striking, as senior defender Bridget Curtis (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) found the back of the net off a corner from midfielder Katelyn Economopoulos (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin).
Despite exceptional goals by both teams, the headlining play came in the 68th minute, when Marauders goalkeeper Sabrina Zimmerman came out of the box to defend an open attack from the Golden Bears. The junior from Johnstown was issued a red card, forcing head coach Matt Procopio to remove midfielder Peyton Yocum and insert sophomore Emma Moss into the net for the final 22 minutes of the game.
Kutztown ramped up their attack, taking three shots against the backup keeper and shorthanded defense, but Moss held her own and preserved the Marauders' draw.
Freshman Cassidy Howes (Havre de Grace, Md./Havre de Grace) got the start in between the posts for the Golden Bears, allowing just one goal in on three shots.
KU held the edge in shots (14-3), shots on goal (9-1) and corner kicks (6-3) in a chippy game against a possible postseason opponent.
The Golden Bears return to Keystone Field on Saturday, Oct. 19, at noon for a matchup against PSAC East foe Shippensburg. The game will feature a food drive for Operation 143, an organization that provides food for students in the local community who typically go without food. Everyone is encouraged to bring food donations to the game to support the mission.
