FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The 23rd-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team had a successful start to 2024 at Saturday's Fairmont State Invitational.
Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) (157 lbs.),
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) (165 lbs.) and
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) (184 lbs.) won their weight classes and 13 Golden Bears placed in the top six of their respective brackets in leading Kutztown to the team title.
Â
Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) and Weinberg each claimed their second tournament titles of the season after winning their brackets at the season-opening Glenville State Invitational.
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg), meanwhile, secured his first career collegiate tournament title.
Â
The Maroon and Gold compiled plenty of bonus points with several dominant wins throughout the tournament.
Â
Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) used three technical falls to advance to the final at 157 before handling Lindsey Wilson's Will George with a 12-4 major decision in the championship bout. In his three tech fall victories, Gimbor outscored his opponents a combined 54-6.
Â
Brother
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg), eighth in the latest NWCA Division II 165-pound rankings, was even more imposing during his four wins on the day. The Bernville, Pa., native pinned Trine's Nayl Sbay in the second round (2:39), Thomas More's Kody Kaimann in the quarterfinals (1:24) and Slippery Rock's Keith Brubach in the semifinals (2:03). Gimbor cruised to an 18-3 tech fall over Otterbein's Cale Callahan in the final.
Â
Returning All-American and fifth-ranked Weinberg blew through the 184-pound bracket with a pin and three tech falls. The redshirt junior needed just 17 seconds to pin Fairmont State's Chigozie Ijeoma in the first round, marking the fastest pin of Weinberg's career. He followed that up with a 17-2 tech fall of Otterbein's Kyle De Moss and a 16-0 shutout of teammate
Jeremy McKinney (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford Area) to reach the championship. Waynesburg's Jessie Orbin was no match for Weinberg, who notched a 17-1 tech fall to win the weight class.
Â
A pair of redshirt freshmen earned runner-up finishes for head coach Rob Fisher's squad.
Javien DeLeon (Allentown, Pa./Liberty) registered pins in his first two matches before downing Trine's Joey Langeman by tech fall, 16-1, in the semifinals. DeLeon fell to Fairmont State's Nate Pelesky, 14-7, in the final at 133 lbs.
Aliazer Alicea (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) collected bonus points in three wins on his way to the final at 141 lbs. Alicea won by major decision in the second round (14-1), tech fall in the quarters (15-0) and pinned Trine's Jett Boots in the semis (4:32). He dropped his title match to Lindsey Wilson's Adrian Ayala, 6-2.
Â
Gary Deyarmin (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) placed third at 149 lbs., while
Jeremy McKinney (Nottingham, Pa./Oxford Area) (184 lbs.) and
Liam Akers (Annandale, N.J./North Hunterdon) (197 lbs.) did the same. Deyarmin recorded a pair of wins by decision and one by forfeit. McKinney won his opening match by pin, before getting a victory by decision and forfeit. Akers provided a pin and a pair of tech falls during a 3-1 day.
Â
KU's 125-pound entries,
Nic Allison (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) and
Trent Thompson (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern), each won a pair of matches to reach the semifinals. After both fell in their respective semifinal matches, they shared third and fourth place with a no contest in the third-place match.
Â
Rounding out the Bears' placewinners were
Alex Ward (Manassas, Va./Battlefield) (fourth at 174),
Dustin Swanson (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) (fourth at 285) and
Ethan Baney (Hanover, Pa./South Western) (sixth at 174).
Â
Kutztown racked up 171 points to win the first edition of the Fairmont State Invitational by a comfortable 64.5 points over NAIA member Lindsey Wilson (Ky.). Trine was third at 87.5, with Waynesburg (86) and Manchester (69.5) making up the rest of the top five.
Â
The Golden Bears will resume their dual schedule later this month when they travel to Erie for a two-match swing against Mercyhurst and Gannon, Jan. 26-27.
