WILMINGTON, Del. – Kutztown women's volleyball defeated Jefferson in five sets in the second of two matches Friday afternoon in the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Wilmington University. KU fell in the opener in four sets to the host Wildcats.

The Golden Bears (3-3 overall) hung on for the five-set victory over the Rams by scores of 25-23, 15-25, 25-21, 25-20 and 16-14. KU lost to Wilmington by scores of 25-23, 18-25, 21-25 and 17-25.

Sadie Doss (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and
Gabriela Fialova (Ledec nad Sazavou, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium Ludvika Danka) had successful days attacking the net as the duo combined for 101 kills between the two of them. They both had career-best totals in kills in the second match with Doss tallying 29 and Fialova just behind at 28.
Mallory Hoch (Zionsville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) had 38 digs.
Cat Farole (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) recorded 58 assists and
Maddie Ruhland (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) contributed 39 assists.

Kutztown will play one more match as a part of the Wilmington Invitational as it will take on Holy Family tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 9, at 2 p.m.

Kutztown got off to a fast start, winning the opening set, but Wilmington, playing on its home floor, responded by winning the next three sets to finish off the match in four.

Doss led the attack with 23 kills and added 10 digs and two blocks. Fialova recorded a season-best 21 kills and contributed 18 digs and two blocks. Farole finished with 28 assists and Ruhland totaled 15. Hoch led the defense with 20 digs.

The Golden Bears had a higher total of kills throughout the match, finishing with a 55-45 total. But the Wildcats were a force at the net defensively, holding a 13-4 advantage in blocks.

Just like it did in the opening match of the day, Kutztown took set one, but dropped the second. Unlike against the Wildcats, however, the Golden Bears finished off the job and won two of the final three to leave Friday even.

KU had to come from behind down 7-2 in the fifth set and scored 14 of the final 21 points to take the match.
