No. 5 Golden Bears fend off Millersville 2-1

Lexy Endres scores her fourth goal in three games

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The fifth-ranked Kutztown University women's soccer team (2-0-1, 1-0-0 PSAC East) opened the 2023 PSAC East slate in style, fending off Millersville (0-1-1, 0-0-1 PSAC East) 2-1 in the home opener at Keystone Field Wednesday night. Isabella Rossetti (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) netted her first goal of the season, while Lexy Endres (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) continued her red-hot form with her fourth goal in three games.

The Golden Bears controlled the game for the early part of the contest, but a Millersville goal with 28 minutes left in the game made things nervy down the stretch. The KU back line led by Bridget Curtis (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and Skyler Jordan (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) locked things down as the Golden Bears held on for the win.

KU's first goal came 20 minutes in courtesy of Rossetti. The senior forward from Cherry Hill, N.J. rifled a cross into the box that deflected off a Maruader defender and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Endres' goal came 10 minutes later. Joslyn Stoltz's (Levittown, Pa./Calvary Christian Academy) initial effort was stopped by the Millersville goalie, but Endres was there to put home the rebound and make it 2-0. Millersville's lone goal came via a wonder strike from Isabel Coy in the 63rd minute.

The Golden Bears had the advantage in shots (16-6), shots on goals (7-3), and corner kicks (7-3). Endres led the way with four shots in the game, while Curtis, Ella Holmes (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall), Maura Day (Huntington Valley, Pa./Abington), and Katelyn Economopoulos (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) had two shots each. Cassandra Baker (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) made two saves in between the sticks for KU, while Bella Fiorenza had five saves for Millersville.

The Golden Bears hit the road for a two-game stretch, starting at Lock Haven on Saturday, Sept. 9 with a 1 p.m. kickoff. KU then matches up against rivals West Chester next Wednesday.
