Game Recap: Field Hockey | | by C.J. Hemerly, Assistant Sports Information Director

No. 3 Kutztown has late lead slip at No. 1 East Stroudsburg

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Senior Jillian Buchman (Drums, Pa./Hazleton) scored the game's opening goal in the third quarter for third-ranked Kutztown, but defending national champion and top-ranked East Stroudsburg tied the game with 2:59 left and found the back of the cage 3:21 into the first overtime period to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game, 2-1, Tuesday afternoon at Whitenight Field.

The Golden Bears (6-1 overall, 1-1 PSAC) had their win streak and shutout streak end at six games. They were the lone team in DII to not have allowed a goal before Tuesday.

Buchman tallied her third goal of the season 3:03 into the third quarter off an assist by Greenleigh McGehee (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh), which broke a 0-0 deadlock after 30 minutes. The KU defense, which had not allowed a goal in the first six games, went the first 57:01 of Tuesday's contest continuing the scoring streak. With less than three minutes to go, however, the Warriors (7-1, 1-0) capitalized on a penalty stroke by Maddy Barbush to even up the game and send it into overtime. In extra time, Nicole Krozser ripped a shot past Mia Kepler (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) to send her team off their home turf with the victory. Kepler finished with one save.

Indicative of the important conference game for both teams, each came out running and had their chances on the offensive third. ESU totaled two shots and KU one, none of which were on goal. It was a lot more of the same in the second quarter as the teams tried to be the first to break through. There seemed to be some jitters as the teams were playing fast-paced.

Shots were even for both teams at 7-7, with ESU leading 3-1 in shots on goal. KU had a 13-6 advantage in penalty corners.

The is the lone meeting between the teams, which both earned spots in the PSAC Final Four last season, hosted by Kutztown. They are almost certain to meet in the postseason in a little over a month.

Kutztown remains on the road for its next PSAC contest as it travels to Indiana, Pa., to take on IUP this Saturday morning for an 11:00 a.m., game.
