Perez picks up sixth win of the season as Bears fall to Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Joaquin Perez's (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) sixth singles win of the season helped Kutztown men's tennis avoid being shut out, Monday, but it wasn't enough to overcome Bloomsburg in a 6-1 PSAC defeat at the Burt Reese Tennis Center.

Perez is having a solid freshman campaign, slotting in near the top of the Golden Bears' lineup. The Pachuca, Mexico, native emerged victorious for the third time in his last four singles matches with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 comeback victory over the Huskies' Iu Casamitjana at No. 2.

Perez also teamed with Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) for a 6-4 win over Albert Martin and Vishesh Patel at No. 1 doubles. The duo improved to 6-5 on the season with the triumph, but KU (6-7, 1-3 PSAC) couldn't quite pull out another win to take the doubles point. Bloomsburg (1-10, 1-3 PSAC) won third doubles, 6-3, and second doubles, 6-4, to head into singles with the edge.

There were a number of close matches, including Perez's three-setter, but the remaining five matches all went to the Huskies. Barcelo and Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) sent their respective second sets to tiebreakers before falling short. Barcelo was defeated by Martin at first singles 6-4, 7-6 (9), while Scott Remond held off Arizpe at No. 5, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

No. 3 Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and No. 4 Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) won five games against their Bloomsburg opponents, but both fell by matching 6-2, 6-3 scores. No. 6 Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) took four games off Fernando Barros in a 6-3, 6-1 loss.

Kutztown heads down to Shepherd, Friday, where they'll face the Rams in a PSAC match beginning at 1 p.m.
