BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- West Virginia Wesleyan took control in doubles and never looked back, blanking the Kutztown University men's tennis team, 7-0, in a non-conference match at the WVWC Tennis Courts Friday afternoon.
A 6-0 sweep from Kihiro Karasawa and Emanuel Malya at second doubles had the Bears playing catch up from the get-go and they, unfortunately, couldn't come up with a counter. Camillo Salvi and Kevin Lin clinched the doubles point for the Bobcats (9-7) with a 6-2 victory at No. 1.
Kutztown (7-9) battled hard at third doubles, where
Lucas Cherniak (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuela Superior de Comercio Carlos Pellegrini) and
Jacob Bosler (Elkton, Md./Elkton) fell, 6-3, to Anthony McIntosh and Andreas Hald Dige.
All six singles matches went to the Bobcats in straight sets. Freshman
Emmitt Robinson (Ingersoll, Ontario/Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute) was KU's top performer at No. 4, where he forced a second-set tiebreaker before ceding the match to Lin 6-3, 7-6 (3).
No. 1
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) won three games in his opening set against Karasawa, who is 11th in the ITA Atlantic Region rankings.
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) also went against a regionally ranked opponent in No. 18 Salvi at third singles.
Joaquin Perez (Pachuca, Mexico/Escuela Americana) snagged four games off Mallya at No. 2 in a 6-3, 6-1 defeat, while
Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) won three games in a 6-2, 6-1 setback against Jonathan Lindstrand at No. 6.
Kutztown closes out its 2022-23 season tomorrow at 11 a.m. on the road against Fairmont State.
