KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Kutztown entered this weekend's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division opener with a 10-5 record and winners of four of its last five games. But the opening conference series came against the defending PSAC champions, Millersville. After falling in the opening game on Friday on the road, KU dropped both games Saturday afternoon 8-3 and 8-4, the latter in 11 innings at North Campus Field.
Â
The Golden Bears (10-8 overall, 0-3 PSAC East) have now lost four in-a-row.
Â
Antonio Rossillo (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood),
Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.),
Mitchell Peers (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and
Jimmy Kerley (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) all finished with three hits on the day.
Â
Kutztown remains at home and will hit the non-league action as it hosts Caldwell for two games on Tuesday, March 21, with game one set to begin at 1 p.m.
Â
Millersville 8, Kutztown 3
Â
Following an opening Marauders (21-4, 5-0) run in the top of the first on a wild pitch, the Golden Bears answered immediately in their first at-bats thanks to a two-run homerun to left by Rossillo. Millersville, however, scored twice in the second, once in the third and then three times in the fourth to take a commanding 7-2 advantage.
Â
Kutztown got one back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI, sacrifice fly by Moretski that brought around
Joey Pettinelli (Broomall, Pa./Marple Newtown), but once again Millersville had an answer with a run in the sixth.
Â
Ethan Martini (Trevose, Pa./Father Judge) went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Â
Millersville 8, Kutztown 4 (11 inn.)
Â
Kutztown once again fell behind, but this time, tied it and had a chance to take the go-ahead lead late.
Â
The Marauders put up a three-spot in the top of the fourth inning. Kerley then singled in
Brian Finn (Warrington, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) for the Golden Bears first run of the game in the bottom-half of the frame.
Â
The score would remain 3-1 in favor of Ville until the bottom of the eighth. Peers led off with a single to right field. Three batters later, with two outs,
Michael Burns (Levittown, Pa./Harry S. Truman) worked a walk to put runners at first and second. Kerley delivered again in the next at-bat, doubling into the right center field gap to send both runners across home plate to tie the score. Millersville would get out of the inning and strand the go-ahead runner at second.
Â
After two scoreless innings, the Marauders left no doubt in a five-run 11th inning. Burns once again walked, this time with the bases loaded in the bottom-half to cut the deficit to 8-4. With the tying run up to bat, Millersville once again got out of the jam to leave the field as winners.
