No. 24 Golden Bears top Shippensburg, 33-18

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Aliazer Alicea (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) and Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) provided pins, and No. 24 Kutztown also benefited from a pair of forfeits in racking up 24 points during a 33-18 PSAC dual victory at Shippensburg Wednesday evening.

The Golden Bears (2-0, 2-0 PSAC) never trailed in the match, breaking a 12-12 tie following the 157-pound bout with 15 straight points on wins from 11th-ranked Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) (forfeit) at 165, Ethan Baney (Hanover, Pa./South Western) (decision) at 174 and third-ranked Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) (injury default) at 184.

Redshirt freshman Nic Allison (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) won by forfeit at 125 to put the Bears up 6-0 early and Alicea needed just 1:41 to notch his second pin in as many PSAC duals against Shippensburg's (1-4, 0-1) Jayden Hammonds at 141 to make it 12-3.

The Raiders evened things up on a 10-5 decision from Anthony Lavish at 149 and a Kyler Everly pin at 157, but it was mostly Kutztown the rest of the way.

Gimbor was the second KU grappler to receive a forfeit win and Baney held off Cole Lang, 4-2, for his first dual win of the season at 174. Weinberg, who didn't get to wrestle in KU's dual opener last week after Seton Hill couldn't field an entry at 184, only got on the mat for 2:17 Wednesday before Ship's Owen Koch was forced to retire with an injury.

The six points awarded to Weinberg were enough to secure the match victory for the Maroon and Gold.

McIntyre countered a pin from the Raiders' Trey Shoemaker at 197 with one of his own at 285 to cap the scoring for KU. McIntyre went to the second period before putting Diesel Koser to his back for the fall at 4:27.

Kutztown will compete once more in 2023 when it travels to Indianapolis for the 44th annual Midwest Classic, Dec. 16-17. The Golden Bears will resume their dual schedule in 2024 with a trip to the Pitt-Johnstown Duals on Saturday, Jan. 6.
