INDIANAPOLIS -- Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) collected a sixth-place finish at 184 pounds and
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) finished seventh at 165 pounds as No. 25 Kutztown University wrapped up competition at the 44th annual Midwest Classic Sunday inside UIndy's Nicoson Hall.
Third-ranked Weinberg went unbeaten in four matches Saturday with a technical fall and three pins to reach the semifinals. He suffered a minor injury in his quarterfinal victory over 12th-ranked Aidan Petersen of UIndy and did not take to the mat during Sunday's matches.
Under the NCAA's newly introduced medical forfeit rules for the 2023-24 season, Weinberg's first result of the day against Central Missouri's Damon Ashworth in the semifinals, went in the books as a loss since it was not immediately preceded by an injury default. Follow up medical fofeits against Colorado's Jason Bynarowicz (consolation semifinals) and 10th-ranked Wyatt Lidberg of UMary (fifth-place match) do not count against the 2023 All-American's record.
Gimbor had another strong showing with a 2-1 record on Sunday. He topped Cole Ritter of Maryville, 8-6, in the sixth round of consolations, before falling to No. 12 Cory Peterson of McKendree, 7-3, in the consolation quarterfinals. For the second time in as many days, Gimbor bested eighth-ranked Brady Schuh of Wisconsin-Parkside. Yesterday it was by pin, this time it was an 8-0 major decision to secure seventh place.
Kutztown concluded its trip to the Midwest Classic tied for 21st of 51 teams with 44.5 points. The prestigious tournament drew 21 of the top 25 teams in the latest NWCA Division II Poll and another 11 who were receiving votes.
Lander won the tournament with 126 points, 14 ahead of runner-up Wisconsin-Parkside (112). Central Oklahoma (109), Upper Iowa (108.5) and UMary (98.5) completed the top five.
The Golden Bears will resume their schedule after the holidays when they travel to the Fairmont State Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024.
