KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) set the new program record for career blocks with her 200th, finished three points shy of a double-double as Kutztown women's basketball had a fourth quarter lead slip in dropping its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference home and season opener 65-58 Friday afternoon inside Keystone Arena.
Remolde, who was honored prior to the game because she eclipsed 1,000 career points earlier this season, finished with seven points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks for the Golden Bears (1-4 overall, 0-1 PSAC).
Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) paced the KU offense with 14 points and added nine rebounds and two assists.
Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) recorded 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Fighting Scots (2-3, 1-0) erased a 16-point deficit, trailing 46-30 with 3:28 left in the third quarter. They scored 12 of the last 14 points in that frame and then outscored the Maroon and Gold 23-10 in the fourth stanza to earn the win.
Kutztown was off to a fast start as it scored on its opening offensive possession on a three-pointer by Pulliam. The Fighting Scots tied it on its next possession with a shot from long distance of its own out of Hope Garrity. KU then took back the lead on a three-pointer by Remolde and extended its advantage to 19-12 after the opening quarter.
A Hearn three-pointer at the 7:27 mark of the second quarter pushed the Maroon and Gold's lead to double figures at 24-14. Edinboro pulled to within just two points (30-28) after a Hayley Simms shot from distance with 3:30 left in the second, but KU scored the quarter's final five points with a three by
Leila Hurley (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) and a layup by
Zara Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon).
Simms was sensational for Edinboro as she was the focal point of the offense and ended with a game-high 28 points on 9-for-21 shooting from the floor.
Zerman tallied seven points, six rebounds and four assists. Hurley contributed six points and
Bella Arcuri (Fallsington, Pa./Pennsbury) had five points and three rebounds for KU.
Kutztown has a quick turnaround as it will host Mercyhurst in back-to-back days tomorrow, Saturday, December 2, at 1 p.m., from Keystone Arena.
