GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) and returning All-American
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) won weight class titles at 157 and 184 pounds, respectively, as the 24th-ranked Kutztown University wrestling team opened its 2023-24 season with a fourth-place team finish at Saturday's Glenville State Invitational.
Â
Gimbor and Weinberg represented two of the Golden Bears' eight placewinners on the day. Also placing for KU were nationally ranked
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) (third at 165),
Aliazer Alicea (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) (fourth at 141),
Roman Moser (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) (fourth at 174),
Dustin Swanson (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) (fourth at 285),
Trent Thompson (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) (fifth at 125) and
Hunter Horton (James Creek, Pa./Tussey Mountain) (fifth at 174).
Â
Weinberg, 28-3 a year ago and ranked third in the NWCA Preseason Poll, continued to show his prowess in tournament competition. The Philadelphia native won his weight class in three tournaments last season. This season started no differently, with Weinberg using pins of Peyton Lemon (Ashland) and Brady Ross (Glenville State) to reach the final against 10th-ranked Anthony Giampietro of Millersville. Weinberg controlled the bout and picked up a 10-4 decision over his PSAC rival.
Â
Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) also enjoyed early season tournament success last year with weight class titles at the ESU Open and Bob Quade Cyclone Open. He was off to a 12-1 start by the time the calendar flipped to 2023, but an injury at the KU duals put a damper on what was shaping up to be an outstanding first season with the Bears. In Saturday's tournament, Gimbor pinned Glenville State's Wiley Houser in 2:45 to get his season off on the right foot. He followed that up with a 7-2 victory over Nick Carbone in the semifinals and cruised to an 11-2 major decision in the final against King's Bo Perkins.
Â
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg), ranked 11th at 184 lbs. in the NWCA Preseason Poll, advanced to the quarterfinals of his bracket before being upset by Ashland's Sevriano Garza, 7-5. The Bernville, Pa., native bounced back with four consecutive victories and avenged his earlier loss to Garza with a 7-5 overtime win in the consolation final to place third. Gimbor was a bonus point machine in the tournament, producing two pins and three technical falls.
Â
After redshirting as a true freshman, Alicea was itching to make an impact. He came out of the gates with impressive wins over Dalton Minnick of Glenville State (17-1 technical fall) and Nico Crosnoe of King (2:35 pin) to reach the semifinals. A one-point defeat at the hands of Colton Stoneking (Fairmont State) sent Alicea to the consolation semifinals where he pinned King's Ashtan Hendricks in 4:25 to earn the right to wrestle for third. Gavin Weaver of Ashland was able to get the best of Alicea this time, however, with KU's entry settling for fourth after a 4:52 pin.
Â
Senior
Roman Moser (Eagleville, Pa./Methacton) recovered from a loss in his opening match to storm back through the consolation bracket at 174. The Methacton product won by technical fall over Hayden Flynn of Ashland (18-1, 3:44), pinned Cooper Bachman of Emmanuel (2:58) and pinned teammate
Hunter Horton (James Creek, Pa./Tussey Mountain) (0:52) in the consolation semifinals. The consolation final came down to the wire, with Moser dropping a 3-2 decision to Vincent Galang of King and placing fourth.
Â
Horton won back-to-back matches to start the day before running into fourth-ranked Nate Barrett of Ashland in the semifinals and suffering an 11-2 defeat. Teammate Moser knocked him into the fifth-place match and he was awarded a forfeit victory against Glenville State's Cade Linn.
Â
Swanson, Kutztown's starting heavyweight in 2022-23, also had to fight his way through wrestle backs after taking a loss in the second round. He did so by pinning three opponents in four matches, taking Glenville State's Kourdell Todd (3:54), Seton Hill's Ethan Cain (0:26) and Glenville State's Gavin Shamblin (2:14) to their backs. Swanson would finish fourth after dropping the consolation final to Ashland's Wyatt Bailey by technical fall, 15-0 (7:00).
Â
Thompson rounded out Kutztown's placewinners with a 3-2 tournament to take fifth at 133. He scored 21 points in a major decision victory (21-13) over Aidan Wilson of Glenville State. It was the most points scored in a single bout by a Golden Bear grappler on the day. Thompson added a win over Alex McMiller of Emmanuel by pin (1:48) before his run was halted by eventual weight class champion Luke Acuna of Ashland in the semifinals. Thompson eventually got the better of McMiller for the second time with a 13-12 decision in the fifth-place match.
Â
Kutztown scored 122.5 points as a team, good for fourth place of 11 competing teams. Of the Golden Bears' 22 entries, 19 earned at least one win.
Â
Redshirt freshmen
Nic Allison (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) (125 lbs.),
Javien DeLeon (Allentown, Pa./Liberty) (133 lbs.), Alicea (141 lbs.) and
Wayne McIntyre (East Stroudsburg, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) (285 lbs.) along with sophomore
