KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Sadie Doss (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) and
Gabriela Fialova (Ledec nad Sazavou, Czech Republic/Sportovni Gymnazium Ludvika Danka) combined for 30 kills and
Gianna Agosti (Nesquehoning, Pa./Marian Catholic) recorded a match-high 15 digs, but Kutztown women's volleyball lost in four sets to Shippensburg Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match inside Keystone Arena.
Â
Scores of the match were 19-25, 22-25, 25-14 and 7-25. The Golden Bears (7-10 overall, 0-5 PSAC) are still searching for their first conference victory of the season.
Â
Doss finished with a match-high 16 kills, had 14 digs and three blocks. Fialova tallied 14 kills, 14 digs and two blocks. Agosti added five assists to her total and
Cat Farole (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) contributed 30 assists, six digs, two blocks and one kill.
Â
The Raiders (13-6, 4-1) took control of the match early on with a first set victory thanks to hitting a match-high .184% with 14 total kills. KU held early leads of 4-1 and 7-4 due to kills by Doss and
Julia Post (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge), but also multiple attack errors out of the Shippensburg offense. SU, however, went on a 5-0 run to go on top 9-7 and never trailed the rest of the way, scoring the set's final four points. The Raiders led for the majority of the second set until the Maroon and Gold tied the score at 22-22, with four consecutive points, but Shippensburg closed it out on a 3-0 spurt.
Â
Kutztown, however, would not be swept on its home court and answered in the third set. Fialova opened with a service ace and
Grace Ingram (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) followed with a kill for a quick two points. A couple of Raiders attack errors combined with an ace by
Mallory Hoch (Zionsville, Pa./Southern Lehigh) sent Kutztown to a 7-2 advantage, one which it never surrendered, on its way to its first win of the match.
Â
Shippensburg must have had a motivational speech at intermission because it came out firing on all cylinders in set four, scoring the first six points and staking a 10-1 lead. The advantage climbed to 15-2 and the Raiders walked off victors.
Â
Kutztown will remain home for another conference double header next weekend as it hosts Bloomsburg on Friday night, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m., and then follow that up with a match with Lock Haven at 2 p.m. Both PSAC matches are inside Keystone Arena.
