MANHEIM, Pa. -- Kutztown University wrestling was ranked 24th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's (NWCA) NCAA Division II Preseason Poll, while returning 184-pound All-American
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and 165-pound national qualifier
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) appeared in the individual rankings.
Weinberg checks in third in the 184-pound rankings as he chases a national championship in 2023-24. The redshirt junior from Philadelphia went 28-3 last season with a team-leading 14 pins on his way to a fourth-place finish at nationals and his first All-America honor. Weinberg paced Kutztown in wins, dual wins (11), dual team points scored (52), wins against nationally ranked opponents (four) and technical falls (four). Weinberg is a two-time Super Region 1 finalist, winning the 184 title in 2022 and finishing as runner-up last year. In 43 career matches with the Maroon and Gold, Weinberg has a 37-6 record.
Gimbor's first season with the Bears was a rousing success. The Bernville, Pa., native topped 20 wins (21-10), while producing five pins, five major decisions and three technical falls. Gimbor grabbed the region's final national bid at 165 by finishing third at the Super Region 1 Championships. He won a pair of matches at the national tournament, going 2-2.
Kutztown returns to the team rankings for the first time since March, 2022. The Golden Bears were on the cusp of the top 25 throughout last season, receiving votes in multiple polls. KU finished with a 7-5 record (3-4 PSAC), before placing fourth at the Super Region 1 Championships and 23rd at the NCAA DII Championships.
Kutztown begins its 2023-24 season this Saturady, Nov. 4, at the Glenville State Invitational.
