MILLERSVILLE, Pa. –
Sarah Gatehouse (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and
Jillian Buchman (Drums, Pa./Hazleton) did the scoring and the third-ranked Kutztown field hockey team's defense blanked Millersville for a 2-0 road victory in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference regular season finale Wednesday night.
Â
The Golden Bears' (14-2 overall, 7-2 PSAC) defense, led by Gatehouse,
Alyssa Eager (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley),
Danielle Panati (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) and
Mia Kepler (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) helped to earn the program's 12th shutout of the season, setting a new record and leading the nation in clean sheets. The seven goals allowed on the year is the lowest mark in Division II. It was also the fifth consecutive win for the Maroon and Gold and their fourth win over a ranked team this season.
Â
Gatehouse's goal, her fifth of the season, came with just 2:06 remaining until halftime, on an assist by Doyle off of a penalty corner to break the 0-0 deadlock. Doyle sent the ball in on the whistle up to the top of the key. Gatehouse gathered and took one touch and then fired home a low driving shot that made it by multiple defenders and the Marauders goalie into the back of the cage.
Â
The Maroon and Gold's second goal of the contest also came via a penalty corner in the fourth quarter. Just 0:48 into the final stanza, Kutztown was awarded the corner.
Erin Gonzalez (East Earl, Pa./Garden Spot) sent it in to Gatehouse, who passed it off to Buchman, who fired home the shot that secured the two-goal cushion and victory. It was Buchman's sixth tally on the year.
Â
Millersville (9-7, 3-5) did not record a shot all game. Kutztown had four shots, two of which were on goal as it converted 100% of its shots on target into goals. KU also held a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners. Kepler was not forced into action.
Â
Kutztown concludes its 2023 regular season with a non-conference road game at Frostburg State this Saturday at 1 p.m. KU will then compete in the PSAC quarterfinal round the following Tuesday, Oct. 31, at Andre Reed Stadium at a time and against an opponent to be determined.
