KUTZTOWN, Pa. –
Sarah Gatehouse (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) and
Andie Sierer (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) tallied goals in the second and four quarters, respectively, to lead third-ranked Kutztown field hockey to a 2-1 win in non-conference action Friday afternoon over Lander University at Andre Reed Stadium.
Â
It's the third victory in-a-row for the Golden Bears (12-2 overall). They have one more non-conference game remaining on the regular season portion of the schedule, at Frostburg State next Saturday, Oct. 28.
Â
The teams traded opportunities on both ends in what was a scoreless opening quarter. With 0:14 left in the second quarter, Kutztown was awarded a penalty corner. In a chaotic, ensuing 0:14, Sierer sent the ball in and three different Golden Bears had shots on cage, as
Juliana Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Schalick),
Jillian Buchman (Drums, Pa./Hazleton) and Gatehouse all recorded shots at point blank range, but Bearcats goalie, Isabel Elenga, came up big and made the saves. She couldn't do it all, however, and before the ball was kicked or cleared away in front of cage, Gatehouse slotted home her rebound to break the deadlock.
Â
Then, following a scoreless third quarter, Sierer netted her fourth goal of the season on an assist by Donato, the 10th of the season for the junior, which ranks third in the conference. The Bearcats (9-4 overall) got on the scoreboard with a late goal on an untimed penalty corner as the scoreboard read 0:00. It was the first goal allowed in seven non-conference games this season.
Â
Kutztown outshot Lander 21-7 overall and 17-5 in shots on goal. KU also held a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Mia Kepler (Wall Township, N.J./Wall) finished with four saves.
Â
Kutztown will be hosting Slippery Rock tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 21, at 3 p.m., for the final home regular season game at Andre Reed Stadium. It will be senior day as head coach
Marci Scheuing and her staff will recognize 10 senior student-athletes prior to the game.
