LOCK HAVEN, Pa. -- Kutztown University's
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Wrestling Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Weinberg, a returning national qualifier, remained unbeaten on the season with a 3-0 weekend at the Virginia Duals, helping Kutztown to a runner-up finish in the American College Division.
The Philadelphian is ranked seventh at 184 lbs. in the latest NWCA rankings and improved to 16-0 on the year while securing bonus points for the Golden Bears in each of his three bouts.
Weinberg started the weekend with a 2:22 pin of Liberty's Jackson Wakeland, Friday, as KU won the James River Pool and advanced to the Gold Bracket semifinals Saturday. The redshirt sophomore's 17-2 technical fall over Isaac Kassis gave the Bears their first lead of the match against Alvernia and a pin at 285 sent KU into the finals against nationally-ranked Glenville State.
While Kutztown wasn't able to complete its sixth Virginia Duals American College title run in as many appearances, falling to the 16th-ranked Pioneers 32-16, Weinberg emerged with another win, picking up a 9-1 major decision No. 9 over Cole Houser.
Weinberg leads the Golden Bears in victories, pins (six) and tech. falls (three) this season.
Kutztown is back at home Wednesday to take on PSAC foe Millersville in Keystone Arena at 7 p.m.
