Golden Bears second half surge at Millersville gives them second straight PSAC East victory

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Kutztown women's basketball went into the halftime locker room on the losing end of the scoreboard, but used a strong second half to take control and remain unbeaten in its division, defeating Millersville 60-48 Wednesday evening in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Divisional game.

The Golden Bears (7-7 overall, 5-3 PSAC) are now back to .500 overall and are two games over .500 in the conference for the first time since winning their opening two games over then-No. 15 Gannon and Clarion back in early December. The victory also has some extra positive feelings since the last time they were in Pucillo Gymnasium, last February, they walked off the court losing by three points.

KU led by one after the opening quarter, 17-16, but found itself on the other end, trailing by one, 24-23, at halftime. Then in the third quarter, the Maroon and Gold offense and defense began to click. Kutztown outscored the Marauders (7-6, 2-5) 23-14 in the third quarter and then finished off the game on a 14-10 run in the fourth.

The game might've been won from beyond the arc as Kutztown drained seven 3-pointers, while holding Millersville without one. KU also shot 73.3% (11-for-15) from the free-throw line, compared to just 61.5% (8-for-13) for the Marauders.

Three finished in double figures in scoring, led by 16 from Zara Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon). She added three steals and went 3-for-4 from long distance. Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) tallied 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, going 3-for-6 from three, and added two rebounds and two assists. Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) recorded 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals. Sydney Pierson (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) contributed seven points, six rebounds, two steals and two steals. Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) added six points, seven rebounds and three assists and Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) finished with five points, three rebounds and three assists.

KU came away with a season-high 10 steals.

Kutztown will next host Lock Haven in East Division action this Saturday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m., from Keystone Arena.
