KUTZTOWN, Pa.- The 13th-ranked Kutztown University women's soccer team opened PSAC play with a 3-0 shutout victory over Shepherd at Keystone Field on Wednesday evening.
Graduate student Kayla Argen (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) opened her account for the season from the spot in the first half, before goals by Emma Fuegel (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) and Caroline McDonald (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) put the game too far out of reach for the Rams. Emme Wolfel (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) only had to make two saves in the game as the defense registered its second straight clean sheet to open the season.
The game was a loose and fiesty affair as the first half progressed. It wasn't until a Golden Bear attacker was cut down at the top right corner of the box to give KU a penalty in the 35th minute. Argen stepped up with her veteran confidence and slotted the ball into the bottom left-hand corner for the 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later, a scramble in the Shepherd box lead the ball to the feet of Fuegel. After her initial shot was blocked, she lofted an awkward ball over the Rams keeper and into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead and the first goal of her college career. That would be the scoreline heading into the half at Keystone Field.
It only took five minutes after the break until Kutztown found its third. McDonald ran down the wing, cut inside of the Shepherd defender, and curled a ball into the far side netting to make it 3-0. It was the first goal in the freshman's career as she continues to prove her value on coach Erik Burstein's squad.
That would be all Kutztown needed to secure victory. The Ram's offense could barely get a good look at Wolfel's goal, only registering two shots on frame and one off the crossbar late in the game.
The Golden Bears move to 2-0-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in conference play. The team has a quick turnaround as KU travels to Shippensburg this Saturday, Sept. 3. That game will kick off at 2:30 p.m.
