CHARLESTON, W.Va.-- The 13th-ranked Kutztown University women's soccer team opened its 2022 campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over Charleston (W.Va.) down in West Virginia Thursday afternoon.
Isabella Rossetti (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill East) and Ally Doyle (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) opened the scoring in the first half and a wonder goal from Lexy Endres (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) in the second half sealed the deal for Erik Burstein and his squad. The defensive unit played a near perfect game, only allowing one shot on frame in the 90 minutes of action.
The Golden Bears started the game of the front foot, controlling possession and generating the first opportunities of the contest. Emme Wolfel (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) made a great interception on a cross to snuff out one of the Charleston's few chances in the opening 15 minutes of action.
Freshman Caroline McDonald (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) was causing issues down the wings for the Charleston defense, getting into dangerous attacking positions early on in her college debut. McDonald's first good opportunity on goal came in the 19th minute, when her shot from outside the box went over the bar.
The Golden Bears found their opener in the 25th minute. Sadie Goad (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) drove towards the goal line and slide a ball across to Rossetti, who put the ball past the goalie at the near post for the 1-0 advantage.
The 1-0 scoreline became 2-0 only 10 minutes later. A free kick from 25-yards out by Endres was saved by the goalie, but the resulting rebound deflected off Emma Fuegel (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) and was eventually tapped in by Doyle to double the KU lead. That would be the scoreline heading into halftime as the Golden Bears held a 2-0 advantage over the Golden Eagles.
KU defended well in the second half, limiting any dangerous chances and possession from Charleston. Both teams had minimal looks on goal, minus a few long shots from outside the box.
It would be one of those long shots that would find the back of the net for Kutztown's third goal. Endres picked up the ball up outside the 18-yard box, dribbled through two defenders, and perfectly placed a ball top shelf to extend the Golden Bears lead to 3-0 with 23 minutes left in the contest.
That would be all Kutztown needed as the team moved to 1-0-0 on the new season with the 3-0 victory. It's the seventh straight win for the Golden Bears against the Golden Eagles and the fifth straight season with a win on the opening day.
KU opens PSAC play at Keystone Field next Wednesday against Shepherd. That game will kick off at 7 p.m.
