Judy Lawes claims 2021-22 KU Women's Coach of the Year recognition

KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Fresh off leading her program to one of the best seasons in its history, Kutztown University softball head coach Judy Lawes was voted as the 2021-22 Dr. Dorothy Moyer KU Women's Coach of the Year, announced Friday.

It is her department-record 10th coach of the year honor since the award was first recognized in 1987. She also joins her freshman outfielder, Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township), who was awarded the KU Female Freshman of the Year award earlier this week.

Lawes, who completed her 35th season at the helm, had one of her best seasons in charge in 2022, leading KU to its second Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title in program history. She earned her second straight PSAC East Division Coach of the Year. Lawes has had a winning record in 33 of her 35 seasons at KU and holds an overall record of 1,065-594-2 (.641), fourth among active Division II coaches in victories. Lawes has led the Golden Bears to all 20 of their appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Kutztown reached the Super Regional round of the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in program history this year--first since finishing as the national runner-up in 2013-- and registered its seventh 40-win season, finishing 40-15 overall.

Lawes, along with her staff of assistant coaches Liz Parkins, Chris Blum and Biz Keeny were selected as the 2022 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

KU was led by five All-PSAC East First Team members in Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point), Bridget Bailey (Norwood, Pa./Interboro), Sarah Harvey (Swanton, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union), Brianna Hughes (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) and Kate Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan). Bailey was the East Pitcher of the Year. Her and Hughes were also named NFCA and D2CCA All-Region performers.

Kutztown University's annual athletic awards are selected through a vote of the department's administration, head coaches and support staff. Throughout the week, winners were announced on KUBears.com and the Golden Bears' social media channels. Winners can be found below.
