KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- The Kutztown University men's tennis team defeated Shepherd, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Keystone Courts for its first PSAC win of the season.
The Golden Bears were winners at all three doubles flights and four-of-six singles flights, while the Rams were fighting an uphill battle unable to field entries at third doubles and sixth singles.
Kutztown's (3-5, 1-4 PSAC) No. 1 pairing of
Gonzalo Barcelo (San Pedro, Argentina/Nuestra Senora del Socorro) and
Neal Devkaran (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI Catholic) took care of Yuto Shimotsuji and Joseph Michael, 6-2, to secure the doubles point for the Maroon and Gold after
Ethan Moyer (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) and
Kurt Abell (Sinking Spring, Pa./Conrad Weiser) were awared a victory by default at No. 3.
Sebastian Arizpe (Puebla, Mexico/Colegio Humboldt de Puebla) and
Justin Gincauskas (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park Secondary) finished off the doubles sweep with a 6-3 victory over Sebastian Sevilla and Ryan Cox.
Needing just two points after Abell's default win at No. 6 singles, Kutztown got its first in the form of a 6-4, 6-3 triumph by Moyer over Hamilton Hall at No. 5.
Shepherd (5-7, 0-4 PSAC) won the next two matches to close within 3-2, but Arizpe locked up the winning result for KU with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Michael at No. 3 and Gincauskas finished off the day with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 straight set victory over Ryan Cox at No. 4.
Prior to the match, the program honored its lone senior
Bobby Frankenfield (Telford, Pa./Souderton) for his dedication to the program.
Kutztown travels to Penn State Harrisburg for a makeup match tomorrow at noon. The Golden Bears and Nittany Lions were scheduled to play March 24, but rain forced a postponement from the original date.
