KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Senior
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) moved into a tie for the team lead in singles victories this season with her fourth, helping Kutztown avoid a shutout at the hands of Bloomsburg in a 6-1 PSAC East defeat at the Keystone Courts Wednesday afternoon.
Maher, from Shillington, Pa., won her 17th career singles match in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, over the Huskies' Anna Chikhalenko at No. 2. The veteran improved to 3-3 at flight two and now shares the team lead for singles wins (4-8) with
Jessika Klo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) (4-7) and
Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) (4-8).
Bloomsburg asserted itself during doubles, winning all three matches, including No. 1 and No. 2 by 6-1 scores.
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) and Klo battled to the end at No. 3, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Isabella Sarquis and Alyssa Mazurek from a 6-4 victory.
Outside of Maher's win, the Golden Bears (2-9, 2-3 PSAC East) couldn't break through in the remaining five singles matches. Lazarchak provided the toughest test for the Huskies (5-6, 2-2 PSAC East), taking Luana Bernardi 12 games in the opening set and grabbing two additional games in the second in a 7-5, 6-2 setback.
Makarski and Klo won four games apiece in their straight set losses at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively.
The Golden Bears will honor Maher, their lone senior, during Friday afternoon's Senior Day conference match against Shepherd. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
