WILMINGTON, Del. –
Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area),
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional) and
Brianna Hughes (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) powered the Kutztown University lineup Sunday afternoon, combining for seven of the 17 total hits on the day as KU won game one 6-3 before falling in game two 8-4 in a non-conference doubleheader.
Â
Lipowski led the way with four hits and had two RBIs and both Donato and Hughes finished with three hits and two RBIs each.
Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) and
Kate Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) each recorded two hits on the day with the former scoring three runs.
Â
The Golden Bears (20-10 overall), who hadn't played in six days since a two-game sweep over Bloomfield last Monday, April 4, put themselves in a good position early in game one, scoring the game's first five runs and led 5-0 after two-and-a-half innings. Hughes ripped a two-run home run in the top of the second, her eighth of the season which is tied for second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, and then
Kristin Geesey (Bainbridge, Pa./Elizabethtown) singled to left field, scoring
Sarah Harvat (Bangor, Pa./Bangor). In the next frame, Lipowski had an RBI double the opposite way to right and then Donato tallied a run-scoring single for the 5-0 lead.
Â
Bridget Bailey (Norwood, Pa./Interboro) won her PSAC-leading 11th victory on the season, throwing a complete game. She allowed three runs between the third and fourth innings, but settled down over the final three frames.
Â
In game two, the Maroon and Gold bats started off slow as the Wildcats (18-14) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after five innings. Even when KU got onto the scoreboard via an Auvil solo home run in the sixth, Wilmington answered in a big way, plating four more runs in the bottom-half of the inning.
Â
Kutztown cut its deficit in half with three runs in the top of the seventh off RBI singles by Donato,
Hannah Reimel (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) and
Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township).
Â
Kutztown will make up a previously postponed doubleheader at Lock Haven University tomorrow, Monday, April 11, for two games, beginning at 1 p.m.
