Golden Bear Lacrosse comes up just short in first road game of season at Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Less than 48 hours after a season-opening, 17-goal victory Thursday night, the Kutztown University women's lacrosse team was in a one-goal game until the final buzzer. After tying the game with 2:53 to play, Lock Haven scored with 1:05 to go and won the ensuing draw control to defeat KU 13-12 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game.

The Golden Bears (1-1 overall) evened the score at 12-12 following a goal by Sam Graf (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), but the Bald Eagles (2-1) broke the deadlock 1:38 later via a tally from Josey Shaffer. Lock Haven then won the draw control and ran around to drain the clock and hang on for the victory.

Lailah ElBouazzaoui (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) led the way for Kutztown with five goals, a season-high for the freshman. Graf tallied two goals and Olivia Eilbacher (Cherry Hill, N.J./Camden Catholic), Emma Meakim (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland), Shannon Lake (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford), Kayla Brooks (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) and Lexie Jackson (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) all found the back of the net once. Graf, Eilbacher and Meakim each had an assist.

The Maroon and Gold opened the game scoring four of the first five goals and led 4-1, 4:08 into the contest. But Lock Haven netted six straight spanning the final 8:31 of the opening quarter and the first 10:16 of the second quarter, while KU was held scoreless for 24:16 in the first half and found itself behind 7-4. Kutztown scored two before halftime and then took the lead, 8-7, 5:27 into the third quarter, but the Bald Eagles netted three straight and never trailed the rest of the way.

Through two games, ElBouazzaoui leads the team with eight goals and Kutztown as a team has 31.

Kutztown remains on the road for its next two games, beginning on Wednesday, March 9, with a trip to Holy Family at 5 p.m.
