BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Kutztown University women's lacrosse led 10-7 midway through the third quarter, but Bloomsburg finished the final 20:10 of regulation scoring five of the last six goals to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Divisional game 12-11 Saturday afternoon at Bloomsburg.
The Golden Bears (3-2 overall, 0-1 PSAC) recorded six third quarter goals to take a 6-5 halftime deficit and turn it into a 10-7 lead with 8:42 left in the third. But the Huskies (5-1, 2-0) turned it on offensively and had a decisive run to finish off the game.
Shannon Lake (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) found the back of the net with 0:46 to go in the third quarter, but that would be KU's last tally of the game as Bloomsburg, trailing 11-9 heading into the fourth, scored three unanswered, including the game-winner with 2:44 remaining.
Kutztown had a chance with possession and under a minute to go, but a turnover in their offensive zone prevented the comeback attempt.
The loss stops a two-game in streak for the Maroon and Gold, their longest of the young season thus far.
Freshman
Sam Graf (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) led the team with three goals, tying a season-high and also had five draw controls, which led KU. Lake and
Lexie Jackson (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) both recorded two goals and
Emma Meakim (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland),
Kayla Brooks (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield),
Morgan Hurd (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland) and
Lailah ElBouazzaoui (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) rounded out the KU scoring with a goal each.
Bloomsburg took control of the game early with three goals in the first 5:00 of play. Lake and Hurd cut their team's deficit to just one with back-to-back tallies, but the Huskies finished the opening frame scoring two of three and led 5-3.
The second quarter was all Graf as the freshman scored twice as KU outscored Bloom 2-1 in the 15-minute frame and found itself trailing 6-5 at halftime. The Golden Bears had three straight goals to open the second half by Jackson, Graf and Meakim and then scored two consecutive after the Huskies got on the scoreboard at the 11:23 mark.
Jenna Blesson (Sparta, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) finished with 12 saves in goal and a team-high four ground balls.
Kutztown remains on the road to take on Millersville in its next game on Tuesday, March 22, at 4 p.m.
