BOCA RATON, Fla. – Senior pitcher
Amber Brugger (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) threw a complete game, five-hitter and allowed just one run as Kutztown University defeated Lynn University 2-1 in the opener. KU dropped the second game 7-4 Friday afternoon to conclude its time in the state of Florida.
Â
The Golden Bears (12-6 overall) went 8-3 in a six-day stay in the sunshine state.
Â
Kutztown combined for 11 hits in the doubleheader, only three of which came in game one. Brugger needed to have her stuff working, and she did, earning her third victory of the season to remain unbeaten at 3-0.
Â
The 1-through-4 batters in the lineup,
Brianna Stocklin (Deptford, N.J./Deptford Township),
Kate Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan),
Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) and
Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area), each finished with two hits on the day. Auvil had three RBIs coming off a three-run home run in the fifth inning of game two.
Â
Kutztown will make up a previously scheduled doubleheader with Wingate University tomorrow, Saturday, March 19, with game one beginning at 1 p.m. That will conclude KU's spring break trip and it will open up its home slate of competition on Monday, March 28, for two against Georgian Court, beginning at 1 p.m.
Â
Kutztown 2, Lynn 1
Â
In a pitcher's duel, Brugger was just a little better than Lynn starter Faith Miller. Brugger pitched a complete game, five-hitter, allowing just the one run to remain unbeaten on the season.
Â
Kutztown finished with three hits, two of which were doubles. Stocklin and Lipowski both doubled in the top of the first inning as KU went up 1-0 following an error by the Knights second baseman that allowed Stocklin to score following Ostaszewski's at-bat. Kutztown's second run came on an error in the second inning.
Brittany Hubler (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had the other hit for KU.
Â
Lynn scored its lone run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Aymee Godmaire after Miller doubled to leadoff the frame. Brugger locked in from there and did not allow another runner to cross home plate.
Â
Lynn 7, Kutztown 4
Â
Kutztown fell behind 2-0 after three innings of play and had just three hits through the first four innings. But in the fifth, Stocklin and Ostaszewski singled, followed by Auvil going deep over the left field fence for her second HR this season, giving KU the 3-2 lead.
Â
The Knights quickly answered, however, scoring two runs in the bottom-half of the fifth and three more in the sixth to take back the lead. Lipowski recorded a sacrifice fly in the seventh, the 10th of her career, tied for second all-time in program history, but that was all the KU offense could muster up the rest of the way.
Â
Lynn outhit Kutztown 12-8 and got to starting pitcher,
Bridget Bailey (Norwood, Pa./Interboro), who lost for just the third time this season. She struck out four batters.
