FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. –
Sarah Harvey (Swanton, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) won Kutztown University softball's first game of its spring break trip south with her arm last Sunday, March 13. She did it with her bat in its latest game, breaking a tie in the fifth inning with a three-run home run to send KU to a 6-4 victory over host Nova Southeastern Wednesday night in a single game. The second game was not played due to early weather that caused game one a more than two-hour delay.
The Golden Bears (10-4 overall) won their fifth in-a-row and seventh of their last eight and are 6-1 this week in the state of Florida. Every batter in the lineup for the Maroon and Gold recorded at least one hit, but none was bigger than Harvey's, who was also the lone player with two hits.
After just two batters in the top of the first inning of a game that started at 5 p.m., weather forced the game to go into a delay, one that lasted about two hours.
When play resumed, the Sharks scored two early runs in the bottom-half of the first inning and kept that lead until the third inning when
Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) helped Kutztown score its first run via a sacrifice fly. Nova Southeastern got a run right back in the fourth and went back up by two runs, leading 3-1 heading into the fifth.
Zoe Texidor (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) reached on an error to leadoff the inning, then after two straight outs,
Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) walked and Lipowski reached on an error, scoring Texidor.
Brianna Hughes (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) then singled in Auvil to tie the score at 3-3, bringing up Harvey to the plate. The junior then ripped her first longball of the season the opposite way to right center for three runs and a 6-3 advantage. The Sharks got one back in the sixth, but
Amber Brugger (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) shut the door on a comeback effort. Brugger struck out four and won for the second time in three days.
Kutztown is scheduled to play two games at Barry University tomorrow, Thursday, March 17, beginning at 5 p.m. KU's only defeat on the trip was to Barry, 6-4, back on Sunday.
