KUTZTOWN, Pa- The Kutztown University women's baskteball team took advantage of a hot third quarter to secure a 60-46 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division victory over Lock Haven Saturday afternoon at Keystone Arena. With the win, Golden Bears (19-4 overall, 12-2 PSAC) have clinched a spot in the PSAC tournament, the first team from the East to do so.
The Golden Bears have made it to five straight PSAC playoffs dating back to the 2016-17 season.
With only eight players active for today's competition against the Bald Eagles, four players scored double digit points. Leading the charge was junior forward Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and senior guard Rylee Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), both players recording double-doubles. Remolde led the Golden Bears' scoring with 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while adding four blocks and three steals on the defensive side of the ball. Derr notched 13 points and 10 rebounds and filled out the stat sheet with three assists and a steal. Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) scored 12 and Abbey Hearn (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) added 10 points to round out the double digit scorers.
After a tight first quarter and a slow second for both teams the Golden Bears found themselves up by six points at the half. Coming out of the break, Kutztown began to separate itself, going on a 17-0 run in the last six minutes of the quarter, outscoring the Bald Eagles 20-8 in the quarter.
Lock Haven (8-12, 5-11) managed its best offensive quarter in the final period of play, outscoring KU 18-14, but could not make up for the massive third quarter by the Golden Bears.
Kutztown is set to hit the road Wednesday, Feb. 9th, to take on the Milllersville Marauders at 5:30pm.
