Women’s Basketball completes fourth-quarter comeback for third straight victory

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Kutztown women's basketball wrapped up its non-conference portion of its schedule in a positive way. After dropping four of its previous five out-of-conference games to open the 2022-23 season, KU erased a seven-point, fourth quarter deficit, then held on to defeat Holy Family 57-52 Wednesday night at the Campus Center at Holy Family.

The win gives the Golden Bears (4-4 overall) three-in-a-row, their longest win streak of the season to date and pushed them back to .500 overall for the first time since they were 1-1.

Just as it looked like the recent trend of non-conference losses would continue, the Maroon and Gold turned the tides. Trailing 43-36 with 7:46 to play, Kutztown went on a 14-2 run in the next 4:35 to take a 50-45 advantage with 3:11 remaining. The lead went to as many as six points, twice, in the next 1:12, before the Tigers (5-5) pulled to within just two, at 54-52 and 1:07 left. Holy Family went 0-for-3 from the floor the rest of the way and Casey Remolde (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) and Annie Whalen (Ivyland, Pa./Archbishop Wood) combined to go 3-for-4 from the free-throw line to put the game to bed.

Remolde finished with a game-high 15 points and added three rebounds. Both Naia Pulliam (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) and Zara Zerman (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) tallied 10 points, with the latter grabbing five boards. Whalen was just shy of a double-double, recording eight points to go along with eight rebounds. Bella Arcuri (Fallsington, Pa./Pennsbury), in just her second game of the season and first since Nov. 11, had a season-high five points.

Holy Family took early leads of 3-0 and 5-2, but KU was out in front 11-10 after the opening quarter and 24-20 at halftime. The score was tied 36-36 heading into the fourth quarter.

Kutztown will now have 11 days off until its next game, at IUP, next Sunday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m., as part of back-to-back games in consecutive days before Christmas. KU will then play at Seton Hill the following day, Sunday, at 1 p.m.
