GREENSBURG, Pa. -- Julien Maldonado (Boyertown, Pa./Boyertown) got Kutztown off to a quick start in Friday night's PSAC dual opener with a pin at 125 pounds and the Golden Bears never trailed host Seton Hill, holding on for a 24-22 victory.
Maldonado, a redshirt freshman getting his first run in the starting lineup, took down the Griffins' Mark Paradine twice in the opening period, the last of which led to a fall at 2:03 that put the Maroon and Gold out in front 6-0.
The two sides countered each other throughout the first four bouts, resulting in a 10-all deadlock nearing the halfway point of the match. Tenth-ranked
Collin Wickramaratna (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) used five takedowns and a reversal to score a 13-5 major decision over Nolan Daerr at 141, while Seton Hill (4-5, 0-1 PSAC) got a major decision from William Burgess at 133 and a Dominic Williams victory by injury default at 149.
Brothers
Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) and
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) put Kutztown (1-0, 1-0 PSAC) ahead for good.
Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) outscored Jimmy Baxter 3-0 in the third period and registered the riding time point to triumph, 6-3, at 157.
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) followed with a point-scoring clinic in a 23-7 (6:02) technical fall win over Colby Romjue at 165. Dalton attacked Romjue early and often, racking up eight takedowns, a reversal and a four-point nearfall in the highest-scoring match of the evening.
Kane Kettering drew the Griffins within 18-16 with a 68-second pin at 174, but KU answered with decisions from eighth-ranked
Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) at 184 and
Tyler Fisher (Lenhartsville, Pa./Kutztown) at 197. The pair of victories made it 24-16 and locked down Kutztown's third straight season-opening victory.
Weinberg, one of two returning national qualifiers for the Bears, shutout Brandon Matthews 5-0. Fisher, making his 197 dual debut, compiled 12 points on three takedowns and three reversals on his way to a 14-9 win over Riley O'Mara.
The Golden Bears will take part in the Centenary (N.J.) Bob Quade Cyclone Open this coming Sunday, Dec. 4, to close out its pre-holiday schedule. The Golden Bears will resume their dual schedule Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023, when they host the KU Duals.
