MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- Matthew Weinberg (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) continued his unbeaten start to the 2022-23 season with his second 184-pound bracket victory in as many tournaments, while
Collin Wickramaratna (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) placed third to lead Kutztown University wrestling at Saturday's "Shorty" Hitchcock Memorial Open.
Weinberg, ranked ninth in the NWCA Preseason Poll, pinned American International's Matt Bremner in 4:30 to advance to the quarterfinals, where he promptly pinned Long Island's Gavin Claro for the second time in as many tournaments.
In the semifinals, Weinberg outlasted Lehigh's Jack Wilt, 8-6. The Philadelphia native then defeated Wilt's Lehigh teammate, JT Davis, by a 6-5 score to win the bracket and move to 8-0 on the year.
Twelfth-ranked Wickramaratna bounced back from a tough ESU Open to go 2-1 at Millersville. He earned a 13-4 major decision over Devin Matthews of Long Island in the quarterfinals, before suffering a 10-5 loss to eventual bracket champion Braden Basile of Army Prep in the semis. Wickramaratna held off freshman teammate
Christian Doi (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill), who was competing unattached, 5-3 in the third-place match.
Doi, who took fourth, was one of two unattached Golden Bears to place in the weight class. Fellow freshman
Aliazer Alicea (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) won three straight matches to reach the final, where he fell to Basile, 6-2.
Freshman 125-pounder
Nic Allison (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) was the only other placewinner for the Maroon and Gold, finishing sixth.
Kutztown saw
Sean Smith (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) (157 lbs.),
Dalton Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) (165 lbs.),
Ethan Baney (Hanover, Pa./South Western) (174 lbs.) and
Dustin Swanson (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) (285 lbs.) reach the quarterfinal round of their respective championship brackets. Baney and
Bailey Gimbor (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) (157 lbs.) won three matches apiece, tied for second most behind Weinberg's four.
The Golden Bears will begin their dual season and PSAC competition with a trip to Seton Hill, Friday, Dec. 2. It marks KU's only dual match during the 2022 portion of this season's schedule.
