KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- A dramatic
Jillian Buchman (Drums, Pa./Hazleton) overtime winner lifted the No. 4 Kutztown University field hockey team (13-2,5-1 PSAC) over No. 5 Millersville (11-3, 4-2 PSAC) 1-0 at Andre Reed Stadium Wednesday evening.
After a chaotic scene in the KU circle, sophomore Greenleigh McGehee (New Tripoli, Pa./Northwestern Lehigh) played a ball down the sideline, to Buchman. The Drums, Pa. native then fizzled a ball across the goal that deflected off a Millersville defender's foot and past the goalie for the overtime winner. It was the seventh goal of the season for Buchman and McGehee's second assist.
Despite the goal stealing the headlines, the game was a defensive slugfest. The reigning PSAC Athlete of the Week Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) was spectacular in net again for the Golden Bears, making nine saves, the second-most in a game this season. KU was outshot in the contest 12-4, with a 10-3 shot-on-goal advantage in favor of Millersville.
The whole defensive unit played a massive part in the shutout, limiting the Marauders' high-quality scoring chances. Danielle Panati (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) made one of the plays of the game, saving a Katie Strickland shot off the line midway through the third quarter.
It's a massive win for the Golden Bears, who have rattled off three-straight wins against top-10 teams and have won seven straight games. KU and East Stroudsburg are currently both at the top of the conference with 5-1 records and three regular season games remaining. Those two teams will meet at Andre Reed Stadium on November 1.
KU is back in action this Saturday, Oct. 29, on the road at Mercyhurst. That game from Erie, Pa. will start at 5 p.m.
