Box Score WEST CHESTER, Pa. -- Sophomore
Megan Doyle (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) tapped in a goal right in front of cage that tied back the score 3-3 and force overtime, but No. 1 West Chester scored the golden goal game winner with just 1:51 left in the first overtime period to send the Golden Rams to a 4-3 victory in the opening game of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition for both teams Saturday afternoon on a misty and overcast day.
The Golden Bears (6-2 overall, 0-1 PSAC) had a successful first three weeks of the regular season, winning their first six games, but have had a difficult last four days, losing their last two.
Olivia Blasone (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) netted the game's opening goal, her third on the year, in the 10th minute of action, off an assist by
Sarah Gatehouse (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson), her team-leading sixth of the season. The Golden Rams (7-0, 1-0) answered 2:10 later. Both goals were off of penalty corners.
In the second quarter, the two teams once again traded goals, just in different order. West Chester earned a penalty stroke 3:24 into the frame and slotted it home past
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) to take its first lead of the contest.
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) then tied the game back up 3:34 later with her team-leading seventh goal on an assist by
Lulu O'Neill (Collingswood, N.J./Collingswood).
The teams went into halftime tied 2-2 and went scoreless over the course of the third quarter. The Golden Rams scored 2:16 into the final frame to take back the lead, but Doyle was in a perfect position in front of an open cage and slotted home a well-placed pass by
Juliana Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Schalick) to tie the score at 3. West Chester thought it had a go-ahead goal with under 5:00 to go, but it was called back because the ball hit a Golden Rams player's foot.
Dotterweich finished with a season-high 10 saves in front of cage for KU.
Kutztown has a quick turnaround as it will head to Frostburg, Md., to take on Lindenwood in a non-conference game on Monday, Oct. 3, at 1 p.m.
