KUTZTOWN, Pa. – In its first game as a top-10 team nationally, the eighth-ranked Kutztown University women's soccer team made sure to keep its reputation as long as it can and began its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference portion of its schedule with a 1-0 shutout victory over Millersville Wednesday night at Keystone Field.
The Golden Bears (3-0 overall, 1-0 PSAC) got onto the scoreboard in the 33rd minute thanks to a goal by sophomore
Allie Tierney (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) on an assist by senior
Gabby Kane (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford). It was Tierney's first career goal and was a right-footed volley right in front of the net after Kane flicked on a first half corner kick for the game's only tally.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak against the Marauders (0-1-1, 0-1) for Kutztown, which, along with Shippensburg, sits atop the PSAC standings undefeated at 1-0.
Kutztown controlled the flow of the game and possession from start to finish. KU outshot Millersville 13-2 overall, 8-0 on goal, and also held an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalie
Cassandra Baker (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) was not forced into action, but earned the win, her second on the year. Defenders
Kylee MacLeod (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts),
Dana Wentz (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley),
Molly McHarg (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) and
Bridget Curtis (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) did not allow any scoring opportunities for Millersville.
Kutztown takes on East Stroudsburg on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m., at Eiler Martin Stadium in East Stroudsburg.
