MANSFIELD, Pa. – Graduate student
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional) tallied her first career hat trick and the fifth-ranked Kutztown University field hockey won its second game in as many days, defeating Saint Michael's College 10-2 Sunday afternoon at the Dr. Art DeGenaro Classic, hosted by Mansfield University.
The 10 goals scored are the most in a game by the program since 2007 when KU netted 11. It is tied for the fourth-most goals in program history.
The Golden Bears (2-0 overall) were also victorious on Saturday with a 7-0 win against Southern Connecticut State. It's the first time since the 2017 season that Kutztown started a season 2-0. The 17 goals through two games is also currently the most in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Donato scored all three of her goals off of set plays. Her first came on a penalty stroke in the second quarter, and her next two happened via KU corners in the third and four quarters respectively. She led a charge of six different scorers for Kutztown, including two by Breanna Craley for the second game in a row and two by
Andie Sierer (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin), and one each from
Rachel Dusman (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg),
Abby Thorius (Strasburg, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and
Juliana Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Schalick).
Dusman,
Olivia Blasone (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) and
Laura Taschner (Newark, Del./Tower Hill School) all had an assist on the day. Senior goalie
Katie Dotterweich (Douglassville, Pa./Daniel Boone) finished with seven saves on nine shots faced to earn the victory in the cage.
Kutztown welcomes Mansfield to town for its home opener Saturday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m.
