Box Score LEESBURG, Va. – Kayla
Argen received the ball and then found Brittany
Arentz near the net.
Arentz calmly slotted a shot into the back of the net for the game-winning, 1-0 victory over Charleston in the second overtime Friday night at the Evergreen
Sportsplex in Leesburg, Virginia.
The Golden Bears (1-0 overall) and Golden Eagles were scoreless after 90 minutes of regulation before the senior duo put KU into the win column in its first game since Nov. 9, 2019. It is the fifth consecutive win in the series for
Kutztown.
It is
Arentz's second career goal and the 11th career assist for
Argen. In a wild chain of events, this was actually the second game-winner in a matter of minutes for KU. Two minutes into the first overtime period,
Savanna Harrison (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) received the ball a couple of steps from the midfield line and dribbled by three defenders, racing down field, before she passed a low moving ball onto the path of
Arentz, who beat the Charleston keeper low for what looked like the winner as teammates rushed onto the field to celebrate at around 9:50 p.m. But referees disallowed the goal and play had to be resumed after a delay.
Argen and
Arentz then connected for the actual winner minutes later.
Kutztown outshot Charleston 9-2 and held an 8-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Emme Wolfel, in her first collegiate game in goal, finished with one save as she was not tested too often by Golden Eagles' shots. The defense in front of her, including Molly
McHarg,
Kylee MacLeod (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts),
Bridget Curtis (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South), Dana
Wentz,
Alisea Munshower and
Jocelyn Fowler (Orefield, Pa./Parkland), prevented any attacking threat for a majority of the 91-plus minutes.
Kutztown remains in Virginia and will take on Frostburg State in its next game on Sunday, Sept. 5, with kickoff set for 12:30 p.m.
