BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Kayla Argen's (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) rip from the right corner of the 18-yard box deflected off the head of a Bloomsburg defender and into the net for the only goal of Wednesday night's PSAC East clash as fourth-ranked Kutztown extended its season-opening winning streak to seven games, 1-0, at Steph Pettit Stadium.
On a night where both offenses were suppressed, Argen's spurt in the ninth minute proved vital. Moments before the goal, the senior midfielder took a nice touch pass from
Allie Tierney (Galloway, N.J./Absegami) and cracked a shot from the top of the 18 that Bloomsburg keeper Alexa Ryan had to make a tremendous diving effort on in order to keep it out of the net.
The result was Kutztown's (7-0, 5-0 PSAC East) first corner of the night, however. Argen inserted to Tierney at the far corner flag, got the return pass and found herself with wide-open space at the right of the box. She didn't even bother to try and settle the ball, instead opting for a one-touch shot. The ball rocketed off the head of a BU defender and into the upper left corner of the net.
The goal was Argen's third of the season and stood up as her second career game-winning tally.
Argen's header in the 22nd minute was stopped by Ryan and ended up being the Golden Bears' final one of the game. The teams combined for just six shots --three aside-- and only one after halftime.
Kutztown came into the game allowing 6.2 shots per game and Wednesday's defensive performance marked the fourth time in seven games with four shots or less by a Golden Bear opponent this season.
Besides the even shot total, it was a relatively clean game with back-and-forth play in the midfield. Bloomsburg (5-3-1, 4-2-1 PSAC East) took five corners to KU's one, while just eight fouls were committed across the game's 90-minute duration (5 KU, 3 BU).
Argen attempted all three shots by the Maroon and Gold.
Sophomore
Emme Wolfel (Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) stopped all three shots by the Huskies for her third shutout of the year. She improved to 4-0 with eight saves, a 0.23 goals against average and an .889 save percentage across 388:09. Wolfel is currently riding a 218:06 scoreless streak dating back to the Bears' Sept. 22 overtime road win at Millersville.
The Golden Bears' 7-0 start is their best since winning a program-record 13 straight to open the 2017 season. It's also the program's third-longest unbeaten streak to start a season since 2003.
Kutztown will attempt to continue its winning ways, Saturday, when it ventures to Mansfield for a 5:05 p.m. start.
