KUTZTOWN, Pa. – There were a couple of firsts for redshirt-junior
Antaun Lloyd (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) last Saturday. The defensive back came away with his first interception in Maroon and Gold and also returned a blocked field goal attempt 87 yards for his first career touchdown. His standout play in a 37-29 victory over No. 10 Shepherd University last Saturday earned him his first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division Defensive Athlete of the Week recognition.
Â
Lloyd gives the Golden Bears (3-1 overall, 1-0 PSAC East) their first weekly award of the season.
Â
In a monumental and historic win for Kutztown, Lloyd was a key cog in a defensive unit that controlled a high-powered Rams (3-1, 0-1) offense, which entered the game leading the PSAC in scoring at 42.7 points per game and leading Division II with 509.0 yards per game. The win marked KU's first-ever regular season triumph over a top 10 nationally-ranked team. It was the second straight season that Kutztown went to West Virginia and took down Shepherd on its home turf.
Â
Early in the second quarter with KU leading 10-7, Shepherd lined up for a 22-yard, game-tying field goal. But senior
Nick Palmer (Montville, N.J./Bergen Catholic) blocked the kick and Lloyd scooped it up and took it back 87 yards to the house to increase the Golden Bear lead to 17-7.
Â
Lloyd then intercepted three-time PSAC East Offensive Athlete of the Week, Tyson Bagent, on the first play of the fourth quarter to end a promising Rams drive.
