KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team opened Saturday afternoon with a victory in straight sets over Bowie State, but finished its day falling in five sets to Frostburg State in a non-conference tri-match inside Keystone Arena.
The Golden Bears (5-8 overall) took down the Bulldogs (1-7) by scores of 25-15, 25-14, 25-14, and dropped a five-set thriller to the Bobcats (3-8) by scores of 25-22, 15-25, 25-23, 21-25, 10-15.
In the opening match, it was all KU.
Erin Patterson (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) led the attack with 11 kills, followed by eight from
Sophia Basler (Dover, Del./Smyrna) and six by
Lauren Jackson (Stafford, Va./Mountain View).
Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) finished with 30 assists.
In the second match, the two teams traded victories through the first four sets with KU winning the first and third, but Frostburg State took a 2-2 score and netted three straight points to take the lead for good and never give it back. Basler tallied a season-high 22 kills and Patterson added 19. Morrow and
Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) also had season-highs in assists (49) and digs (34) respectively.
Kutztown returns to conference play with a home match next Friday, Oct. 1, as it hosts Shippensburg in a PSAC East Division matchup at 7 p.m., at Keystone Arena.
