Volleyball wins thrilling, five-set match over Shippensburg, evens PSAC record

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's volleyball team dropped the opening set, but battled back to take the next two and then outlast Shippensburg in the fifth set for a 3-2 victory Friday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division match at Keystone Arena.
 
The Golden Bears (6-8 overall, 1-1 PSAC East) won the match by scores of 21-25, 27-25, 25-19, 16-25 and 15-9. It was the first victory in conference on the season and the first win over the Raiders (5-10, 0-2) since Nov. 1, 2014.
 
Freshman Sophia Basler (Dover, Del./Smyrna) showed her all-around athleticism for KU, finishing with 15 kills, 17 digs and seven blocks, leading the team in kills and digs. Lauren Jackson (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) tallied seven kills and four blocks and Emma Filipovits (Hanover, Pa./South Western) had eight kills. Grace Ingram (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) totaled a team-high nine blocks and was a force at the net. Sydney Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) recorded 17 digs, three assists and two service aces and Lexi Morrow (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) contributed 36 assists.
 
Following a first set defeat, the Maroon and Gold bounced back to take the next two sets, surviving a second set that went into further points and then controlling momentum in the third set to take a 2-1 lead. With its fate in the balance, Shippensburg answered in the fourth set, scoring 12 of the first 14 points to even the match. Kutztown then trailed 4-2 in the final set, but outscored Shippensburg 13-5 the rest of the way to win it in five.
 
Kutztown will be back out on the court in a Saturday matinee when it hosts Shepherd at 1 p.m., from Keystone Arena.
