KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Seniors
Hannah Auvil (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) and
Alyssa Donato (Cedarville, N.J./Cumberland Regional) of the Kutztown University softball team showed off their muscles at the plate, each hitting a home run in the first and second game respectively, powering KU to a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference quarterfinal round series sweep of East Stroudsburg University Thursday afternoon at North Campus Field.
Â
The top-seeded Golden Bears (31-11 overall) won the best-of-three series over the Warriors (26-14) by winning game one, 5-1, and then game two, 5-0.
Â
Auvil ripped a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the third of the opener to stake KU to a 2-0 lead. That hit proved to be the game-winner. She also added insurance with a two-run single up the middle in the sixth for a career-high, four RBI game. Auvil finished with four hits on the day. Donato's three-run long ball in the top of the sixth inning of the nightcap also put the first runs on the board for Kutztown and gave KU all it needed to secure the series victory.
Â
Brianna Hughes (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) totaled four hits at the plate and added two RBIs and two runs scored.
Zoe Texidor (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) had an RBI single and scored a run in game one.
Jenna Lipowski (Nanticoke, Pa./Greater Nanticoke Area) and
Hannah Reimel (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) both recorded two hits Thursday.
Â
The Kutztown duo of
Sarah Harvey (Swanton, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) and
Amber Brugger (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) continued to shine for KU inside of the circle. The pitchers combined for 14 innings of one-run ball, allowing just 10 hits (five each) to East Stroudsburg. Harvey earned win No. 10 on the season in game one and Brugger recorded her 11th victory starting game two.
Â
Kutztown will now host the third seed, West Chester University, in the PSAC semifinals. The best-of-three series begins with two games on Sunday, May 9. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m., from North Campus Field.
