Kutztown Baseball gets back on track with Saturday sweep of Mansfield

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – In a different kind of setting, the Kutztown University baseball team pulls off the series split against Mansfield Saturday after dropping both games yesterday. KU was the away team playing on the home North Campus Field, after games got moved to campus with snow in Mansfield.
 
The Golden Bears benefitted from some strong pitching today holding the Mansfield offense to only five runs today after allowing 30 runs in the two games yesterday. KU won game one 7-2 and followed that up by taking game two 4-3.
 
Both starting pitchers for KU had strong outings, Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) throwing 5.1 innings and Zach Male (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) throwing six full innings.
 
Kutztown 7, Mansfield 2
 
After a scoreless first inning, the Golden Bears jumped out to a four-run lead in the top of the second. With the bases loaded Mitchell Peers (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) continued his hot streak on the weekend and doubled down the left field line, scoring two runners. Mike Piscotty (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Hanover Area) would reach base safely after being hit by a pitch loading the bases again for the Maroon and Gold. Connor Teschko (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley Regional) hit a ground ball to third and reached base safely after a throwing error, one more run would come in to score. Ethan Martini (Feasterville-Trevose, Pa./Father Judge) would ground into a double play but plate one more Golden Bear to extend the lead to 4 runs.
 
Kutztown would continue to score in the top of the third, with runners on first and second Dominic Proietto (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) doubled to right center, scoring one run and moved Zach Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) to third. Moretski would eventually come in to score on a wild pitch, giving KU a 6-0 lead.
 
G. Moretski would hit his third homerun on the weekend, scoring the seventh run for the Golden Bears.
 
Male shut down the Mountaineers for six scoreless innings in his second career start for Kutztown before being relieved. Mansfield would score two runs in the bottom of the seventh on two hits but would come up short.
 
Male would get the win for Kutztown moving to 3-1 on the year, Ryan King would take his first loss of the year for the Mountaineers.
 
Kutztown 4, Mansfield 3
 
After two scoreless innings, the Golden Bears would open up the scoring in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, two runs would score after Andy Blum (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) would reach safely on a throwing error by the third basemen. Collin Bishop (Laurel Springs, N.J./Highland Regional) would ground out to shortstop but would score the runner from third and the Bears would take a three nothing lead.
 
Mansfield would score two runs in the bottom of the fourth on two hits, KU would manage to get out of the inning with bases loaded holding onto a 3-2 lead.
 
Tyler Melko would hit his third homerun of the weekend for the Mountaineers to tie the game up at 3 in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Kutztown would answer in the top of the sixth, with runners on first and second Peers would hit his second double of the day scoring Antonio Rossillo (Warrington, Pa./Archbishop Wood). Kutztown would hold onto the 4-3 lead for the next two innings, completing the two-game sweep on the day.
 
Eric Gustofson take the loss for Mansfield, his fourth of the year. G. Moretski earned his second win of the year moving to 2-1 on the season, Trevor Leverington (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) completed the save for the Golden Bears, his first of the season.
