Baseball falls twice at Shippensburg Thursday, snaps two-game win streak

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Kutztown University baseball team had its two-game win streak snapped Thursday afternoon, dropping both games of a double header at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division action. Game one was 9-5 and game two was 9-0, both in favor of the Raiders.
 
Freshman Ethan Martini (Feasterville-Trevose, Pa./Father Judge) led the Golden Bears (13-11 overall, 7-11 PSAC) lineup with three hits in the opener, he also added a run and an RBI. Gavin Moretski (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) had two hits on the day and two RBIs, both coming in game one.
 
Kutztown never led in any inning Thursday, but, trailing 3-0 in game one, scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by a run-scoring single by Martini and a two-run double from Moretski to tie the score at 3-3. Shippensburg answered, however, with six runs in its ensuing at-bats to take back control of the game.

Shippensburg would take the lead in the bottom of the first on a double down the left field line, one run would score in the inning on two hits. The Raiders would continue to increase their lead in the bottom of the fourth on a bases loaded single two more runs would come in to score.
 
In the top of the fifth the Golden Bear offense would tie up the game scoring three runs in the inning. With runners on first and second Martini would reach on an infield single, and Mitchell Peers (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) would hustle from second managing to score without the ball leaving the infield. G. Moretski would come up next, doubling to right field and both base runners would come around to score.
 
Shippensburg would ensure they game did not stay tied long, scoring six runs on only 4 hits. Kutztown assisted the Raider offense by hitting four batters in the inning.
 
The Golden Bears would score two more runs in the top of the sixth on two hits. With runners on first and second Peers would single through the right side of the infield, brining the runner around from second to score. Another run would come in for the Maroon and Gold when Martini would reach base safely on an error.
 
The Raiders would hold onto their lead the in the seventh securing the win. Kyle Lysy gets the win for Shippensburg moving to 3-2 on the year, Trevor Leverington (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) would get credited for the loss moving to 1-1 on the season.
 
Shippensburg 9, Kutztown 0
 
The Raider offense would explode in the bottom of the second inning, scoring seven runs on eight hits in the inning. Four of their eight hits in the inning were extra base hits for Shippensburg.
 
After two scoreless innings Shippensburg would score two more runs extending their lead to 9 in the bottom of the fifth.
 
The Kutztown offense would be held scoreless and only managed four hits in the second game of the double header. Kiernan Higgins is credited for the win, now 3-3 on the year. Matt Ziminisky takes the loss for Kutztown moving to 2-2 on the season.

The teams get back out on the diamond for two more tomorrow, Friday, April 9, this time on the campus of Kutztown. First pitch of game one is set for noon at North Campus Field.
