SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Kutztown women's tennis upped its record to .500 once again by defeating a shorthanded Shepherd squad, 7-0, Saturday afternoon in West Virginia.
The host Rams (0-3, 0-3 PSAC East) played with just four players, necessitating forfeits at third doubles and fifth and sixth singles.
Jess Marks (Allentown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) and
Elyssa Tomczyk (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) cruised to a 6-1 win at second doubles, with
Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) doubling up Morgan Burner and Ally Frushour 6-3 in the top flight match.
Kutztown (4-4, 3-3 PSAC East) needed just one win in singles following the two forfeits and quickly got it from Maher at No. 2. The Berks Catholic grad supplied a matching 6-2, 6-2 straight set victory over Frushour.
Marks beat Burner 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, Makarski topped Valentina Precaido-Bello 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 and Tomczyk was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Quinn Madden at No. 4.
Saturday's match marked the conclusion of regular season conference play for the Bears, who will just miss out on the final PSAC Eastern Division tournament spot at 3-3, regardless of what Millersville and Bloomsburg do with their remaining league matches. Neither team can finish worse than 3-3 and own head-to-head wins over KU.
Kutztown will travel to Saint Thomas Aquinas this coming Tuesday at noon for a non-conference match.
