KUTZTOWN, Pa. -- Berks County native
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) was a winner in both singles and doubles, Friday, as the Kutztown University women's tennis team triumphed for the third time in four matches, 4-3, over Daemen at the Keystone Courts.
Maher, from Shillington, currently shares the team lead in singles (four) and combined (six) wins after her second two-win match of the season.
The junior teamed with freshman
Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) to score a 6-4 win at first doubles against Frida Rubio and Christina Stasiuk, putting the finishes on a doubles sweep for the Maroon and Gold (3-4).
Jessika Klo (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and
Brianna Wendling (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) shut out the Wildcats' (3-1) Hannah Pagano and Ailish McDevitt, 6-0, at No. 3, while
Amanda Grebosky (Reisterstown, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) and
Jess Marks (Allentown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) recorded a 6-3 win at No. 2.
Elyssa Tomczyk (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) got Kutztown off to a fast start in singles, winning all 12 games in a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of McDevitt at No. 6.
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) nearly pulled off the same against Pagano at No. 5, settling for a 6-1, 6-0 straight set victory.
Maher also won by a 6-1, 6-0 count against Courtney Otis at No. 3 to make it 4-0 Bears, putting the result to rest.
Daemen's Stasiuk rallied past Grebosky 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 at No. 2 as the Wildcats claimed the three remaining matches. Friday's match was the first between the two schools all-time.
Kutztown will make the trek to Shepherd on Saturday for a 1 p.m. start in its return to PSAC East play.
