KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's lacrosse team came out fast and trailed by just three goals at halftime, but then was outscored 10-3 in the second half as Bloomsburg University won a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division matchup 19-9 on Wednesday afternoon on Keystone Field.
The Golden Bears (1-8 overall, 1-7 PSAC) tied the game at 6-6 on a goal by
Cyrose Conteh (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) with 10:41 left in the first half. But the Huskies (6-3, 6-3) would go on to score the next 12 goals unanswered to take control of the game.
Senior
Cyla Cafferata (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y./Sachem North) tallied two goals in the opening 5:34, and following a
Shannon Lake (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) tally, KU found itself ahead 3-1 at the 6:40 mark of the opening frame. The score would be tied three different times over the course of the first 19-plus minutes, at 3-3, 4-4 and 6-6, until Bloomsburg went on its offensive run.
Kutztown went 32:39 between goals, spanning from the middle of the first half to the middle of the second.
Cafferata and Conteh both finished with two goals to lead KU. Lake,
Morgan Hurd (Schnecksville, Pa./Parkland),
Lesley Lane (Jamesburg, N.J./Monroe Township),
Hannah Brewster (Denton, Md./North Caroline) and
Marissa Giancola (Cape May, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) all found the back of the net once.
Emma Meakim (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) and Hurd had two assists apiece and Lake and
Alexis Sigillo (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack) contributed one assist.
Abby Bergman and Kelsey Kilgallon each recorded a game-high six goals to pace the Huskies offense.
Kutztown will hit the road for its next three games, beginning this Saturday, April 17, at 1 p.m., at Millersville University.
