BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- Kutztown took a brief lead with back-to-back wins to open singles play, but Bloomsburg took the final four matches to down the Golden Bears, 5-2, in a PSAC East women's tennis match at the Burt Reese Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
The homestanding Huskies had their way in all three doubles matches, dropping no more than two games in any of them, but Kutztown found its game in singles.
Catherine Maher (Shillington, Pa./Berks Catholic) tied the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Isabella Sarquis at No. 3 and the Maroon and Gold (2-3, 2-3 PSAC East) took their only lead of the day shortly thereafter when freshman
Sarah Lazarchak (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) beat Anna Chikhalenko 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.
There were closely contested matches the rest of the way and had two of those gone KU's way, the result of the match would have too.
Sarah Capoferri defeated
Jess Marks (Allentown, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) 6-3, 6-4 at fourth singles to pull the Huskies (2-1, 2-1 PSAC East) even and her sister, former Bear Taylor Capoferri, doubled up
Claudia Makarski (Garfield, N.J./Paramus Catholic) 6-3, 6-3 at first singles to put the hosts in front for good.
Elyssa Tomczyk (Plainville, Conn./Plainville) nearly knotted things up again, but Devon DiCampli clinched the match for BU with a 6-4, 6-4 win at sixth singles. In the final match,
Amanda Grebosky (Reisterstown, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) rallied from a set down before falling in a super tiebreaker to Giovanna Bonito at second singles 6-4, 6-7, 11-9.
Kutztown, which had a modest two-match winning streak snapped, will try to rebound in a non-conference match at Jefferson this coming Monday at 2 p.m.
